Ecosophy

What is Ecosophy?

Here is the definition by Arne Naess (dead 2009);
By an ecosophy I mean a philosophy of ecological harmony or equilibrium. A philosophy as a kind of sofia (or) wisdom, is openly normative, it contains both norms, rules, postulates, value priority announcements and hypotheses concerning the state of affairs in our universe. Wisdom is policy wisdom, prescription, not only scientific description and prediction. The details of an ecosophy will show many variations due to significant differences concerning not only the ‘facts’ of pollution, resources, population, etc. but also value priorities.

It's important to notice that the word philosophy in the original meaning stand for love to wisdom. Not wisdom in it self. And I think that Naess would agree in this standpoint, as the last meaning in his definition shows.

I think it's possible to include, not only the world, but the whole universe in this thinking, as Naess points out.

In many ways we are connected to the whole universe. And some thinkers believe that the whole universe is a living entity, that can be seen with ecological eyes.

Naess had a view that saw all living things as equal, even animal and plants. As Buddha did, he also pointed out that every creature is dependent on other creatures in a web of relationships. Of course he here was inspired by Spinoza.

I guess he ate meat. But as we become more and more people on the earth, and the most of us want to eat meat, the situation becomes very dangerous for the whole planet.

Arne Naess had some idea that the population of the earth should not be more than about 100 million. But as this is not going to happen, we have to eat less meat.

Damien Mander shows this at a strong speech at TED;  http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_detailpage&v=9FCsyK4aRXQ
