Humanism, modernity and capitalism...

Humanism is a man made ideology, as religion and capitalism and communism  are.

It sets the individual homo sapiens in the center. Its no longer the King, the Pope or some Bishop that will say what is right, was is wrong and how we shall behave,
If there are no God, there cannot be any absolute truth, at least about such things as ethics, politics and what can write and say about it.

The individual should choose  the politicians, and nowadays also the school for their children, the best pharmacy, and as I recently found, even the best inspection firm for the car. Maybe one firm will be more willing to approve your  car...
This is quite new in Scandinavia and Sweden. For a long time led by  Social Democrats that was for state owned institutions. Now it seems that  we are in the lead of the opposite trend.

Its up to the individual to decide as much as possible

Yuval Harari, the Author and professor from Jerusalem, means that this will be complicated as there are no central me or a solid soul inside of us.

The new liberalism requires that there are some entity in us that can make the right decision.
But that is an illusion or just an idea, according to Harari. (Homo Deus, 2015)

We have many, and not seldom contradictory voices inside of us.
And we are off course influenced by media, advertisement, friends and neighbors.
Maybe individuality, at least in its purest form, is an illusion too.

In modern art individualism shows up in interpretations of, for instance, a poem.
No one can say that this or that is the right interpretation. Its often hard to explain what a modern poem really is about. It may have no intrinsic meaning, so the reader can give it her or his meaning.

That can be confusing for many of us, that still wants the "right" answer to what a film, a poem or an artistic photo is about.

But many of us also sees that our interpretation of a poem can change from year to year, sometimes from day to day.
So there are no poem or painting or ready made per se in modernism:

Another part of modernism and capitalism is progress, everything can change and get better; a new I phone, a new way to write  poem and so on.

Nowadays it seem impossible to stop this trend, but just 200 years ago in Europe it was very different.
But now capitalism is all over the world.

In this world we have power mostly as a consumer.
We can for instance, buy ecological coffee  if we are aware off that the birds nowadays have hard to fins insects to eat, and therefor starves.

The politicians seem too to be slaves under capitalism and the idea of growth and progress.

The idea behind this is, according to Harari and others, that the customer is always right.
You have to make products that the customers will by.

The problem is that if we have (nearly) no free will or central me, who is it that chooses the products?

One answer can be; according to evolutionary psychology it is evolution that chooses. Though neither evolution has any will or plan, it  has laws:

It wants us to make children, so it it has made the brain to be interested in sexuality.
It wants us to live enough long to have children, so it makes us interested in food.
There are now more people in world who eat too much than too little.

Evolution uses modules in the brain to this. Modules is not areas of the brain, but more of programs. Harari uses the term "logarithms", as in computers.

So here mindfulness comes in....
If we can be aware of the brains play, listen to the thoughts and the noise - often called the chattering ape inside - we will have more of free will.

Then we don't have to be slaves under evolution.
And even be happier or at least more steady. Evolution has no need of satisfaction in the long run. Just a temporary feeling of luck is enough.
It has, as capitalism has, more need of dissatisfaction.

Nature will also pleased if we become more satisfied with what we already have.
As it nowadays is in unbalance because of our behavior.
